Thoughts to Ponder

I was down on my knees late afternoon today, trying to gather the thick layer of fallen leaves and petals under the bushes of roses by Walter’s garden gate when suddenly, out of nowhere, a child appeared and spoke to me.

“What are you doing there? “I looked up and saw this little boy, about 4 or 5 years old, blonde, wearing corrective glasses, standing there and looking down at me, a smile spread across his lips. The gate was wide open, so I didn’t notice him entering the garden.

“Well, I’m trying to remove dry leaves underneath the bushes, “I said.

I thought he looked familiar. Yes, he was one of the two little boys I’ve seen many times perched on bikes trying to beat each in a race, while the father – a surgeon – and sometimes, the mother, trails behind. They would greet me every time we see each other.

“I’d like very much to help you, but I am sorry, I cannot,” his apologetic reply.

“And why not?” I feigned surprise.

“You know, coronavirus!”
I didn’t expect to hear this from a little boy that I was speechless for a long while, pondering the wisdom coming from the mouth of a babe until he bade me farewell.

“Tchüß!” he hopped along quickly on one leg, saying goodbye.

Amazing that children can sometimes be sensible that grownups.
